Police: Thief stole backpack full of military awards, pictures

WEST LINN, OR (KPTV) -

To a thief it's worthless: A backpack full of military paperwork and pictures. But for the soldier that person stole from, those things are priceless reminders of his service.

"Everything I've accomplished in my career pretty much," Staff Sgt. Daniel Tomes said.

Every award, picture and honor from a decade worth of service was all packed into a backpack in the trunk of Tomes' car.

Then, it went missing.

"When I went to stop at the stop sign my trunk flew open, and I was like, that's weird," Tomes said.

He thinks the trunk had been unlatched by a thief in his West Linn neighborhood. The only thing missing was the bag with his binder full of memories.

"All that stuff in there is pretty much irreplaceable," he said. "There's no monetary value whatsoever. It's just a lot of symbolic value."

It contained everything from pictures with past presidents to a bronze star from Tomes' tour in Afghanistan.

They're mementos he uses as an Army recruiter and things he hoped to pass down to his kids and grandkids.

"I can show them that book and they can say he's not full of it," he said.

For all those reasons and so many more, Tomes hopes to somehow see his stuff again.

"No one's perfect and things happen. But if it means nothing to them I can get it back and continue on with my career," he said.

Police are asking people near Tanner Creek Park to check their yards, garbage cans and anywhere else the thief may have tossed the backpack.
