FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) -
Beachgoers on Folly Beach were shocked twice in one afternoon on Wednesday.
The first shock was seeing a 12-foot alligator sunbathing on the shore.
The second shock was when witnesses say the gator was shot to death right in front of them.
A witness took a photo before the animal was killed. The witness claims there was no warning of the gunfire, and the crowd was just asked to stand back.
A spokesman for the Department of Natural Resources says one of their agents responded to the call. He says the lone DNR agent could not wrangle the gator by himself, and that shooting the animal was in the interest of human safety.
According to Sam Chappelear with DNR, the gator measured 12-feet in length.
