Local leaders are committed to preserving the trees in Southeastern, NC.
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo was joined by several elected officials from the Cape Fear Region at a special press conference Tuesday afternoon in Halyburton Park. The group had a clear message - they want to keep control of trees in the surrounding area.
According to Saffo, state lawmakers are considering legislation that would limit the ability of local governments to regulate trees in their hometowns. The legislation may be considered in the upcoming short session of the General Assembly.
Saffo explained trees are important to the region, and multiple municipalities from the area are committed to keeping them.
Saffo said the Wilmington City Council plans to pass a resolution opposing this legislation. He urged other local governments to do the same.
The General Assembly's short session begins Wednesday.
