WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

The City of Wilmington's Municipal Golf Course is showing signs of progress. Crews have started "sprigging" the greens.

Approximately 12 acres of greens and approaches are being hand planted with 3-6 inch grass stems according to the City of Wilmington. Crews will also be working to plant eight acres of sod around the bunkers and greens.

Sand will be added to the new formed bunkers in the upcoming weeks.

Contracted workers are renovating the greens, bunkers, and practice putting green to the original Donald Ross specifications, and city golf course crews are repairing other parts of the course, such as the rough, fairways and tee boxes.

The greens have doubled in size, and new irrigation, drainage improvements, bunkers and cart paths have been installed according to the City of Wilmington.

The course should be ready for play in October after the grass has had a chance to grow.

The clubhouse and the pro shop will remain open during construction.

This $1.2 million project will mark the first time the course has been fully restored since it was originally completed in 1929.
