The New Hanover County Board of Elections is making it clear that they do not take the issue of robo calls lightly.
NHC Voters received calls on election day from a caller claiming to be New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger. In the robo call, the speaker urged voters to cast a ballot for candidates Woody White and Michael Lee.
At their meeting Monday, the Board of Elections stated that they have a duty and obligation to investigate the robo calls. They are looking to other agencies for help in the investigation process including the District Attorney's office.
Board members said that hundreds of complaint calls were made about the robo calls so the board assumed that thousands of the robo calls went out.
The board agreed that at a minimum, the robo calls were a practical joke. They agreed that at a maximum, the calls were violations of the law that could have had an impact on election results.
They applauded county staff for handling the robo call issue in a timely manner. They also acknowledged that county funds were not used to solicit the calls.
