UNCW Press Release
TALLAHASSEE, Florida – UNCW senior Lori Beth Adams carded a 79 in the second round of the 2014 NCAA East Regional Friday at the SouthWood Golf Club.
Beginning the day part of a six-way tie for third, Adams moved into a nine-way tie for 37th with a 36-hole total of three-over-par 147 (68-79=147). She will begin Saturday's final round at 8:40 a.m. on the No. 1 hole and will be paired with Kennesaw State's Kaew Preamchuen and Penn State's Christina Vosters.
Opening her second round of the 54-hole event on the back under windy conditions Friday afternoon, Adams would par the par-4 tenth hole before bogeys on each of the next four holes moved her to four-over-par for the day.
A birdie on the par-4 15th appeared to stem the tide for the Burlington, N.C., product, but a bogey on the on the par-4 18th would give her four-over-par score of 40 at the turn.
"Lori Beth started off the day on the 10th hole and after missing an opportunity for birdie there she bogeyed the next four holes which really changed the direction of her round," said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. "Tee shots hurt Lori Beth on the back side today as she would hit a good shot, but they always seemed to end up in a position where she either had to get up and down or make a long two-putt to save par."
Heading to the front nine to complete her round, Adams posted a bogey on the par-4 second but got that stroke back with a birdie on the par-4 fourth. Bogeys on the fifth, sixth and nine holes would give Adams a three-over score of 39 on the front nine and complete her seven-over-par scorecard.
"On the front, Lori Beth was able to find the fairway, but with the location of her tee shots and the wind, she was unable to hit the ball close on her approach shots," said Ho. "That led to some extra strokes on the putting surface as she was looking at lengthy putts on nearly every hole, which starts to wear on a golfer after a while."
Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse leads the field with a five-under-par score of 139 (68-71) after the first two rounds of the 54-hole event. Duke teammates Celine Boutier (67-73=140) and Sandy Choi (72-68=140) are tied for second while four players are tied for third.
"Heading into tomorrow, Lori Beth has to manage the course," said Ho. "She's in the morning wave and will start on the front side, which is where she had the most success on Thursday. She can't think about getting to the national championship, she just needs to post the lowest score she can and then let the chips fall where they may. Tomorrow is a brand-new day. That's what great about golf."
The 2014 NCAA East Regional is one of three NCAA regional events tournaments that features 24 teams and six individual entries. The top eight teams and two individuals not part of an advancing team from each of the three regional sites will qualify for the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships, scheduled to be played May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
