Seahawks shutout The Citadel

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Luke Dunlap had three hits and Jordan Ramsey hurled six shutout innings as UNCW blanked the Citadel, 2-0, to even the non-conference series on Friday at Riley Park.

The Seahawks improved to 24-24 while ending a modest two-game skid. The Bulldogs fell to 20-30 with the home loss.

Ramsey (2-3), who has allowed just three runs in his last 16 innings, scattered four hits and a walk while striking out four. Secrest, the third UNCW pitcher of the game, picked up his fourth save of the season and struck out the side in the ninth.

Citadel starter Austin Mason (1-4) allowed one run, unearned, on five hits and a walk over six innings.

Dunlap posted his second straight three-game to lead the UNCW offense. Ryan LaGrange added a RBI single in the ninth.

Drew DeKerlegan had three hits for the Bulldogs.

Up next: The Seahawks and Bulldogs conclude their series with a 2 p.m. start on Sunday at Brooks Field.

How it happened: UNCW scored an unearned run in the top of the first. Steven Linkous led off with a walk and would score two batters later on a Dunlap single. Neither team would score until the UNCW top of the ninth.

Inside the box score: Both pitching staffs were dominant for the second straight game, limiting hitters to a combined 5-for-29 (.172) with runners on base … With two outs, UNCW was 1-for-9 while the Bulldogs were 1-for-10 … Ramsey retired consecutive batters with the bases loaded in the fourth to keep the Citadel off the board.

Notes: UNCW leads the all-time series, 8-5 … UNCW pitchers have combined for a 1.23 ERA over the last five games and opponents are hitting just .214 … Luke Dunlap (.326) has moved past Corey Dick (.325) for the team lead in batting average … UNCW is now 5-1 in shutouts … The Seahawks improved to 2-1 in minor league stadiums this season.
