UNCW Press Release
TALLAHASSEE, Florida – UNCW senior Lori Beth Adams opened the 2014 NCAA Division I East Regional in impressive fashion with a four-under-par 68 Thursday at the SouthWood Golf Club.
Making her fourth straight postseason appearance and second consecutive as an individual competitor, Adams is part of a six-way tie for third place after the opening 18 holes. She will begin her second round Friday at 1 p.m. from the No. 10 tee. She will be paired with Kennesaw State's Kaew Preamchuen and Mississippi's Abby Newton.
The four-under-par scorecard represents the seventh time this season and the 19th time in her career that Adams has posted a round of par or lower. It also establishes a new career-low for the Burlington, N.C., product, breaking her previous best of 69, set at the JMU Eagle Landing Invitational in January 2013 and matched at the 2013 NCAA Central Regional last May.
Starting on the front side of the course, Adams began the 54-hole event with pars on her first three holes before using a solid drive and an approach shot that came to rest four feet from the pin to eagle the par-5 fourth hole and move to two-under.
She followed her eagle with a birdie on the par-4 fifth and added another birdie at the par-4 ninth to make the turn with a four-under par 32.
Adams opened the back nine with a bogeys on the par-4 10th and the par-3 13th to move back to two-under, but rebounded to finish with pair of birdies on the par-4 15th and par-4 18th to establish her new career-low.
Playing under ideal conditions throughout the day, Adams was consistent during her round as she found the fairway on 12 of 14 attempts and hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation. She only needed 29 putts to complete her round, including an impressive 12-putt effort on the front nine.
Tulane's Emily Penttila holds a two-shot lead over the field after the first round following a seven-under-par 65. Duke's Celine Boutier is second while six players, including Adams, are three shots back in a tie for third.
The 2014 NCAA East Regional is one of three NCAA regional events tournaments that features 24 teams and six individual entries. The top eight teams and two individuals not part of an advancing team from each of the three regional sites will qualify for the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships, scheduled to be played May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
