DA Jon David advances past primary opponent

District Attorney Jon David District Attorney Jon David
SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WECT) -

District Attorney Jon David won the vote majority in the Primary Elections, edging him closer to being re-elected for a second term as the top prosecutor in the 13th Judicial District, which includes Brunswick, Bladen, and Columbus Counties.

With final votes talled in those counties, David beat Republican challenger Ryan Smithwick.

David has been a prosecutor for 18 years and was first elected to represent this district in 2010.

Smithwick is a defense attorney from Shallotte who formerly served in Charlotte and worked as an assistant district attorney in Mecklenburg County.

During the campaign, Smithwick touted support from law enforcement and said that David's cases are taking too long in court.

Meanwhile, David said his felony cases are shorter than the state average, according to data from the NC Administrative Office of the Courts.

With no filed challenger from the Democrat party in the general election, David currently has no other opponents standing in his way to re-election in November.
