Parents in Bladen County are speaking out about their concerns of growing gang violence in the rural area.
Their children were leaving a party over the weekend where they said they were shot at by members of a gang. The windows of the car are shot out and the four passengers barely escaped gunfire.
Parents are asking for increased involvement from law enforcement and parents of the suspects.
"Parents we have to step up and recognize that there is a problem. You can't give up on your child and brush it under the rug," said Ramona Walker, whose child is suffering from injuries related to the shooting.
Barron Leach's son was shot in the knee. He is concerned the injury will compromise his son's college basketball career.
He is also encouraging parents to get involved in their children's life to find out if they are involved in a gang or street violence because it affects other men and women as well.
"As parents we have a responsibility to be their guardian and be their guide. We've got to be in our kid's business," said Leach. "We've got two make sure they are not getting involved in this type of stuff."
Bladen County officials have not confirmed whether or not the shooting is related to gang violence.
