WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers arrested a suspect that allegedly led police on a high speed chase after shooting another man on Castle Street around 7 p.m. Sunday.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers were called to a shooting in the 1000 block of Castle Street. Police attempted to stop a car they spotted leaving the scene, however the suspect refused to stop, leading to a high speed chase that ended in a crash.
Officers arrested 34-year-old Theaussar Edward Dereef and charged him with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, and fleeing to elude arrest.
Officials say that Dereef shot the victim, Tyshawn Joye, four times and that Joye is currently in the hospital under serious condition.
Dereef is currently in the New Hanover County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond. He is expected to be in court for the first time Monday.
