WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Tyler Thornton struck out six over six innings and Ryan Welke had two hits and scored twice as College of Charleston averted a Colonial Athletic Association series sweep at the hands of UNCW with a 7-4 win over the Seahawks on Sunday at Brooks Field.
The Cougars halted a modest two-game skid with the win and improved to 32-15 and 11-4 in the league. The Seahawks fell back to .500 on the season at 23-23 and 8-8 in the CAA.
Thornton (4-4) allowed two runs, one earned on five hits and a walk before making way for the CofC bullpen.
UNCW starter Ryan Foster (1-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. He finished with six strikeouts, one short of his career-high of seven.
Joining Welke with a multi-hit game for the Cougars was Blake Butler with two hits, including a double. Brandon Glazer picked up two RBI's without a hit.
UNCW's Joe Bertone went 2-for-2 with two doubles and was the only Seahawk with more than one hit.
Up next: The Seahawks visit The Citadel on May 8 for a 7 p.m. start. That game will be part of a split three-game series with the Bulldogs. The two will play again in Charleston on May 9 before concluding the series on May 10 (Sunday) with a 2 p.m. start at Brooks Field.
How it happened: CofC scored twice in the fourth inning as Ben Boykin doubled to lead off the and Welke followed with an infield single. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt and Glazer plated Boykin with a ground out to shortstop. Welke would score on batter later on a throwing error by UNCW with two out for a 3-2 lead.
Inside the box score: Charleston scored 3-of-4 base runners from third with less than two out … CofC also had four hits in RBI opportunities … Ryan Foster didn't allow a two-out hit during his stint, but did allow the leadoff hitter to reach safe twice and both would score.
Notes: The Seahawks lead the all-time series, 7-6 … Bertone hit .750 (6-for-8) in the series, slugged 1.750 with two doubles and two home runs, score twice and knocked in four … The series was pitching dominated with CofC hitting .222 (22-99) and UNCW at .242 (23-95) … The College of Charleston had allowed just eight first-inning runs entering the series before UNCW outscored the Cougars, 7-1, in the opening inning in three games combined.
