BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

The SBI is investigating after a man in Bladen County allegedly killed his girlfriend, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Police say Mary Ellen Council, 40, was the victim of a homicide that could be related to domestic violence.

Investigators believe Kelvin Donta McKeithan dropped Council off at the Bladen County Hospital after he allegedly killed her. Council was already dead when she arrived at the hospital.

According to the Bladen County Sheriff's Office, McKeithan drove off and did not return. He was later found hiding underneath bed linens at his house in Clarkton and was arrested.

According to the Bladen County Sheriff's Office, McKeithan has been charged with murder and had his first court appearance Monday morning. McKeithan is currently in the Bladen County Jail with bail at $1 million.

Investigators say that Council and McKeithan had been in a relationship for the past several years.

The cause of death will not be released until after an autopsy can be performed early next week.

The district attorney's office would not comment further as this remains an on-going investigation.
