Earlier this week Wilmington community leaders asked the university to take the lead in organizing efforts to help prevent gang violence. This came at the city's youth violence prevention wrap-up meeting.
Some community members, however, questioned the university's ability to help with this problem.
Jenni Harris, Assistant to the Chancellor for Community Partnerships, said the university will utilize the partnerships it already has in place to better serve the community.
"We're already heavily invested in the community through several of our different colleges- several of the different departments, and I think if we look at what we're doing now and some of the gaps in what they need to address the issues then we can approach it from there," explained Harris.
Harris said there is no set date when UNCW will begin working heavily on this new initiative.
