Tabor City robbery suspects charged with SC murder and arson

TABOR CITY, NC (WECT) – Two men arrested Thursday for allegedly robbing a Tabor City fast-food restaurant were wanted for murder and arson in South Carolina.  

Tommy Lee Benton, 20, of Chadbourn and Mitchell Douglas Cheatham, 19, of Council were arrested in connection with the Monday robbery of the McDonald's in Tabor City

Cheatham and Benton are charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, robbery with a dangerous weapon, second-degree kidnapping and larceny of a motor vehicle. 

The men were also wanted in Horry County, S.C. on murder and arson charges in connection to a fire that trapped and killed Charles Bryant Smith, 68, in his mobile home around 3 a.m. Tuesday on Hwy. 501 near Aynor, S.C. 

The Bladen County Sheriff's office arrested Cheatham in Council. Benton was arrested in Whiteville by the Columbus County Sheriff's Office and Whiteville Police Department. 

Heather Faircloth of Tabor City was also arrested Thursday in connection with the McDonald's robbery. She was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.  

Capt. Russell Conway of the Tabor City Police Department said Douglas Sinkler of Whiteville also faces charges for the robbery. He has not been located.
