The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and the Wilmington Police Department joined together recently and took a step forward in trying to curb the area's gang problem. They're moving officers who specialize in gang activity under one roof to work together on the problem.
That move sparked an interesting thought for me. If the two departments merge on this issue, is it time to consider a complete merging of the departments? Wilmington makes up a significant portion of the county. And New Hanover County deputies already do a lot of work inside city limits for various reasons.
One would think there are plenty of efficiencies to be had if the two departments would operate as one. So what's the hold up? I surmise that efficiencies lead to loss of positions and that leads to loss of power.
I know naysayers might say, "We considered that. It wouldn't work then and it won't work now." But I'd love to see an open-minded and healthy discussion on the possibility.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
