Wilmington chamber "disappointed" with ad linking Woody White to John Edwards

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce is distancing itself from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, following a political advertisement used in the Seventh Congressional District primary race.

The ad uses former North Carolina Senator and Presidential candidate John Edwards, whose career ended in controversial fashion after he admitted to having an extra-marital affair, and faced accusations of misusing campaign funds to hide a former mistress. Edwards made his living as a trial attorney, and is now practicing once again. "Woody white is part of the same trial lawyer lobby in North Carolina, which oppose common-sense  legal reforms pushed by conservatives" says the ad, which is paid for by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

In a news release sent by Director of Communications Scott Czechlewski, the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce expresses its "disappointment" with the ad.  "While we respect the right of the U.S. Chamber's Political Action Committee to endorse candidates, we believe endorsements should be based on a fair representation of the candidate and not perpetuate the pervasive negativity in politics today," said a statement in the news release. "The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce is not a part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and no Wilmington Chamber funds are contributed to the U.S. Chamber's Political Action Committee.  As a matter of long-standing policy, the Wilmington Chamber does not endorse candidates for political office."

No comment on the ad from fellow Seventh District GOP candidate David Rouzer's campaign.

After walking out of a committee meeting Monday discussing funds for victims of Hurricane Matthew, Rep. Brenden Jones (R-Columbus) says he did not get the answers to his questions. “To be honest with you, we saw a lot of pretty charts and a lot of pretty graphs, but we still have no answers,” Rep Jones said about the meeting of the House Select Committee on Disaster Relief.
