Pass Christian Pirates looking to advance past the second round

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) -

One look at the Pirates won-loss record and you might think, Pass Christian's baseball team isn't that good.. 13 victories and 16 defeats.

However, the Class 4A Pirates loaded their schedule with the likes of 6A baseball teams...Gulfport, Biloxi and St. Martin and 5A schools..Long Beach and West Harrison.

Pass Christian head coach Marcus Whitfield says a tough pre-district schedule and dedication in practice has his Pirates in the hunt.

Whitfield said,"It's the work that these guys have put in day-in and day-out in practice. Get out here, hit, focus a little bit and work on defensive fundamentals and things of that nature that got us to where we're at right now."

Pass Christian swept Florence in the first-round of the Class 4A State playoffs last week. The Pirates scored 20 runs while the pitching staff of Ethan Necaise and Sean Storey gave up only 3 runs.@

"The last few years in the playoffs have really helped us,"stated Storey. "We haven't got past this round so we're looking to go a lot further this year."

Four Pirates are batting .300 or better, John Moore, Hunter Ladner, Daniel Taylor and Kody Ladner leading way at .396.

Tyler Ladner has picked up the pace at the plate and had a big night Friday in the 13 to 1 win over Florence.

The players like the coaching style of Marcus Whitfield.

Kody Ladner said,"This is his first year coaching us and he's a great coach and we're glad to have him here and he's taught us a bunch of stuff so we're really glad to have him."

The Pirates travel to Newton County 7:00 p.m. Thursday in game one of the best-of-three playoff series.  Game two is set for Friday night at 7:00 in Pass Christian.
