CHARLOTTE, NC (WECT) -

The Pender High School JROTC Raider Team competed in an east coast competition and beat out over 300 other schools for the title "Best of the Best."

The PHS JROTC Raider team competed at a competition at UNC Charlotte over the past weekend. They beat out teams from North and South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland.

The Raider teams had to excel in five categories that tested the teams' physical fitness, endurance, and critical thinking skills. The teams are composed of nine cadets with one sitting out each event.

The team said they broke their own expectations on where they finished because early on all the wanted to do was simply qualify for the event.
