JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A Pascagoula man will serve 15 years in prison for carjacking a woman, then abandoning her 3-year-old on the side of the road in Jackson County just before Christmas 2012.

Bradley Hilsabeck, 27, pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping and one count of carjacking. Prosecutors said when Hilsabeck carjacked the woman, she managed to grab her infant son, but wasn't able to unbuckle her toddler from the car seat fast enough. Hilsabeck took off, then later realized the child was still with him. That's when he left the child and the car seat in a rural area of east Jackson County near Shingle Mill Road and Jim Taylor Road.

Authorities managed to find the 3-year-old and track down their suspect.

"I commend Pascagoula Police Department, along with the assistance of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, on a swift and professional response on this investigation," District Attorney Tony Lawrence said.

Special Appointed Circuit Judge Richard McKenzie sentenced Hilsabeck on the carjacking to 15 years in prison.

On the charge of kidnapping, Judge McKenzie sentenced him to 30 years in prison, but half that time was suspended. The two counts will run concurrent with each other, but consecutive to the seven year revocation sentence he is currently serving.

He must also pay a total of $3,000 in fines, court costs and $300 to the Crime Victims Compensation Fund.

"This senseless act of violence on an unsuspecting family warranted a strong sentence, but I am also mindful of the effect the defendant's acts have had on his family. This case is another sad example of the effect of drugs on our young people," Lawrence said.
