PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

The NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) has issued an alert for the swimming waters in Topsail Beach.

The alert was issued after bacteria levels of enterococci exceeded the state and federal single sample standard. The waters that exceeded the those levels were between the public beach access #0-10 at Ocean Boulevard and Crews Avenue in Topsail Beach.

The NCDENR will test the waters again on Wednesday to see if the levels have increased. If the levels do increase swimming advisory will be issued and signs will be posted to warn swimmers.

Enterococci, the bacteria group used for testing, are found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals. While it does not cause illness, scientific studies indicate that enterococci may indicate the presence of other disease-causing organisms. People swimming or playing in waters with bacteria levels higher than the standards have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness or skin infections according to the NCDENR.
