WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The University of North Carolina at Wilmington announced Tuesday that an applications server was attacked exposing employee information.
UNCW's IT team discovered the unauthorized access to the server which contained a database of names, addresses, and social security numbers of employees, graduate students, and adjunct instructors. The breach also affects those who took a foreign language placement test at UNCW between 2002 and 2006.
Even though sensitive information was exposed during the attack, UNCW says it has no evidence that the perpetrator accessed any of the personal data or social security numbers or that fraud was committed utilizing the exposed information.
UNCW has removed the database from the server so that there is no further unauthorized access.
The school has notified the appropriate state agencies and will continue to investigate the attack.
