NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The trial begins this week for Shannon Jerome Mitchell who is charged with first degree murder.

According to authorities, Mitchell is accused of fatally shooting Gilbert Lee McClammy Jr., who was 44 at the time, as he was getting into his car in the Bowdens Mobile Home Park off Carolina Beach Road in late April of 2013.

District Attorney Ben David said the two men knew each other.

Mitchell already has murder on his record from a prior incident. He was convicted of second degree murder in 2006, according to the NC Department of Corrections.

He served more than five years in jail and was released in 2011.

David says the prosecution will push for life in prison, as Mitchell is not eligible for the death penalty.
