WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Paws and Claws presented bulletproof K-9 vests to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and the Wilmington Police Department K-9 units.
The vests are both bulletproof and stab-proof, protecting each dog's vital organs and spine.
The K-9 handlers are relieved that their dogs will be more protected in a dangerous and criminal encounter.
Each vest cost $2,000 and the donors were thrilled to support the safety of the K-9 dog, almost as excited as the K-9 handlers.
"It makes me feel better to know he's at least protected," said WPD Officer Kendall Murphy, "he's protected from gunfire or a stabbing for me, I know I feel a lot better."
Murphy said her dog, Diablo is often taking the attacks meant for her and she's relieved he'll have some protection.
For Deputy Jason Cumming, his dog Flash, is his best friend. He demonstrated K-9 tactics to a crowd of community members Saturday afternoon and expressed his appreciation for the donation for the vests.
"We are incredibly grateful to know people are even just thinking of the safety of our police dogs," said Deputy Cummings, "these dogs are like family to us."
