WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A pressing bond referendum, opportunity scholarships, charter schools and a pay raise for teachers were some of the issues on the table at a forum for Republican candidates running for Board of Education on New Hanover County. WECT and the League of Women Voters of the Lower Cape Fear organized the event at the Senior Resources Center in Wilmington.

Five GOP candidates are seeking the nomination to run for the four open seats in 2014. Three of the candidates are incumbents: Janice Cavenaugh, Don Hayes and Ed Higgins are all running for re-election. Jim Brumit and Bruce Shell are the two newcomers to this year's elections.

There is not a primary for the Democratic candidates, since three filed to run for the four contested seats. Tom Gale, Chris Meek and Emma Saunders will face the Republican nominees in the November General Election.

On the same evening as the Board of Education forum, nine of the ten GOP candidates running for New Hanover County Commissioner tackled issues such as city-county consolidation, tax incentives for industries, beach re-nourishment funding and crime. The ten candidates include: Dave Conklin, John Dismukes, Campbell Dodd, Derrick Hickey, Charles Kays (who was unable to attend this forum), Charles Kuebler, Ricky Meeks, Frank Roberts, Hank Thomas and Skip Watkins.

There are two open seats in the County Commissioner race in 2014. Incumbents Brian Berger and Thomas Wolfe decided not to run for re-election.  There is not a Democratic primary since only two candidates, Patricia Spear and Rob Zapple, filed to run for the party's nomination.

Election Day is Tuesday, May 6.
