WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - North Carolina ranks 23rd in the nation in the category of best high schools, according to a U.S. News and World Report ranking.

Only two schools in the state were awarded gold medals, 34 earning silver medal rankings. Those rankings reflect how well prepared students are for college based on Advanced Placement tests.

Green Hope High School in Cary is considered to be the top school in the state. Hoggard High School is the highest-ranking school in our viewing area coming in at number 11.

The magazine ranks the top 36 schools in the state. Hoggard was the only area school in the top 36.
