NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Wilmington City Manager Sterling Cheatham presented his report on youth violence to the New Hanover County Commissioners Monday morning.
Cheatham highlighted potential solutions to the community's gang violence problem developed through public forums held across the city. Those possible solutions included adding youth programs at public facilities and improving the graduation rate for NHC schools.
Cheatham had presented this same report to the Wilmington City Council earlier this month.
Cheatham said the next conversations held must be about an expanded effort to fight this community problem. The city manager added that he hopes the commissioners will be a part of this effort.
New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield commended Cheatham and the city on taking the lead in handling this issue. Barfield encouraged the board of county commissioners to step up and support community organizations working to help the youth.
The final community forum on youth violence will be held April 29.
