It is a heartbreaking end to a grueling months-long mystery of what happened to 5-year-old Jeremiah Oliver.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early has confirmed that a body found in a suitcase off the side of the highway in Sterling, MA, on Friday is that of Jeremiah.

Early says the autopsy report is not complete and the investigation is ongoing.

Jeremiah was last seen by relatives in Sept. but was not reported missing until months later in Dec.

His mother, Elsa Oliver and her boyfriend have both plead not guilty to multiple charges and are being held without bail.

State social workers were supposed to be monitoring the Oliver family at the time of Jeremiah's disappearance.

Department of Children and Families Commissioner had this to say in a statement, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Jeremiah Oliver. The Department is grateful for the dedication of the District Attorney and law enforcement partners leading this investigation and will continue to assist in any way we can. DCF continues to focus on caring for Jeremiah's siblings to ensure they are receiving the support they need during this very difficult time."

Meantime, Gov. Deval Patrick praised the work of law enforcement, saying in a statement, "I am so grateful to the State Police and others in law enforcement for their tenacity in finding Jeremiah, and so sad that he was not found alive. We now look to the District Attorney to prosecute this crime to the fullest extent of the law."
