BRUNSWICK, NC (WECT) - Two homes in Brunswick County were destroyed after two separate fires broke out early Saturday morning.

The first house fire was in Calabash. A fire started in a single story home located at 5 Court 11 Northwest Drive in Carolina Shores.

Authorities say the fire was first reported by a neighbor who heard two loud pops and saw heavy smoke from the next court over.  A second call came into 911 via the next door neighbor's medical alert device.

Officials said when they got to that home, heavy smoke and flames were coming out of the house. They say the fire was so strong it was melting the siding on the home next door. Firefighters said they heard screams coming from that next door home. They went inside and rescued a wheelchair bound person.

The home that caught on fire is considered a total loss. Fire officials said they were able to get the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

The owner was not home at the time, and no injuries were reported.

Calabash firefighters were assisted by Grissettown & Longwood and Sunset Beach fire departments as well as Brunswick and Calabash EMS units.

In the northern part of the county, firefighters were busy battling a fire in Northwest at 4861 Harvey's Lane.

One person was home at the time. Officials say he woke up to see heavy smoke in the home. The man was able to get out safely, however, the home is considered a total loss.

Both fires are still under investigation.
