Lucas County holds OVI checkpoints Friday

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Lucas County Sheriff's deputies were working to drunk drivers off the road Friday evening. The department set up multiple OVI checkpoints.

The checkpoints were funded by grant money. Law enforcement agencies are required to advertise the public where they're setting up checkpoints in advance, but they will still catch drunk drivers.

In the first 20 minutes of the checkpoint on Reynolds Road near Central Avenue, 2 men were arrested with 9 warrants between them.

From 8:30 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday morning, the Lucas County OVI Task Force set up at different locations, including Central and Reynolds, Dorr and McCord and Holland Sylvania Road North of Airport Highway.

During the checkpoint deputies and officers from other departments will have 10-15 seconds of interaction with each driver. That's all the time officers need to determine if the driver may be under the influence.

Arresting people who have warrants or for other violations is extra. The number one goal is getting drunk drivers off the road.

"Our whole goal is to deter, obviously, drinking and driving. We don't mind that people are going to the bars or restaurants and having a drink. What we want is them to get a safe ride home. So give somebody else the keys or take the cab or get a designated ride home," said Lucas County Deputy Mark Woodruff.
