Denitra Cox is accused of raping and physically assaulting children.
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
Although we've seen a growing number of female sex offenders, it's still rare to see a case where a woman is accused of sexual and physical abuse.
The charges are chilling and unusual, especially for a woman. Cleveland Sex Crimes investigators have filed charges of rape and child endangering against Denitra Cox, saying she fondled two young children.
Cox is also accused of physically abusing three more children, including one child with severe medical problems.
The agency for Cuyahoga County Social Workers tells us workers have been dealing with the family since 2011. Cox is also a mom with four kids of her own, but last year the county took all the kids away.
19 Action News recently found that there at 19,0000 convicted sex offenders statewide. More than 500 of them are now women. However, most of the charges for female sex offenders are unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, not the kind of sexual abuse Cox did to her victims.
Cox could face more charges as her case goes to a grand jury, and the investigation is still going on.
