Schlosser and Derrick Myers, 35, men died Sunday near the finish line of the race, the first time it has been held in Raleigh April 12.
Cumby funeral home confirmed Schlosser, a native of Indiana, is survived by his wife Renee. Schlosser graduated from Purdue University and then earned his master’s from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
Doctors said dying during these long races can happen, but it’s still very rare. Dr. Virgil Wynia, a cardiologist with WakeMed said, “The statistics run somewhere in the range of less than 1 per 100,000 racers may pass away during the race. In cases like this, there usually is some underlying heart condition.”
