CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

It happened more than a year ago, an absent-minded moment by a truck driver.

And that moment is going to cost all of us big bucks.

It is a gap in Collinwood, cutting off North from South. The pedestrian bridge spanning I90 that was taken out when a dump truck with its bed raised crashed into it last March and you may not be too happy with what we've uncovered.

The damaged bridge had to first be stabilized, then cut up and hauled away.

I90 was closed for two days. The cost was up in the millions. The company that owned the truck is Big Blue Trucking. It had the required insurance, but it's not nearly enough to pay for a new bridge.

"It was my opinion from day one that Big Blue Trucking should have bought this bridge, should have been responsible to repair and rebuild it," said Cleveland Councilman Michael Polensek.

Well that's not going to happen. The rebuild will be about $5 million, meaning taxpayers will have to pay about $4 million. Is it worth it to restore a link to the lake?

"With more people walking than ever before and biking it became very clear that we had to replace the bridge," Councilman Michael Polensek said.

Because truck driver William Edwards plead no contest to failure to control and driving an unsafe vehicle, he went on his way with a fine and the charges can't be considered in any litigation over who pays for the mess he made.
