WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - As WECT celebrates its 60th anniversary, we're taking a look back at some of the big moments we've covered over the decades.
On April 19, 2009, Wilmington native Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA, and WECT was there as Wilmington welcomed her home.
Our cameras followed her as she arrived on the Henrietta to the downtown riverfront for a celebration. From there Dalton made stops all around town, from New Hanover Regional Medical Center to the mall to several local schools.
"I loved visiting Hoggard, my alma mater, and UNCW and then there were some elementary schools I got to speak at," said Dalton in a Skype interview. "I think it was the best Miss USA homecoming in history. Our town doesn't mess around. I mean it was like the Azalea Festival for me!"
Dalton has now traded one coast for another. She lives and works in Los Angeles, modeling, public speaking and running an online women's magazine. Click here to view it: http://sheismore.com/
Dalton also got married just ten months ago, but part of her heart still lies with Wilmington.
"Yesterday I started crying in the car because I was like, I just want to go home."
To a city that proved those five years ago, it knows how to welcome a queen.
"It was just magical the whole thing."
