WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Dozens of people gathered at the steps of Wilmington City Hall Thursday night to hold a candlelight vigil for a missing woman.
Shannon Rippy Vannewkirk has been missing 10 days.
Friends and family teamed with local musicians and church leaders Thursday to keep the search effort going. Even after police announced that foul play is suspected in Vannewkirk's disappearance, the loved ones kept their spirits high.
Vannewkirk's brother, Shawn Dayton, has been making frequent trips to Wilmington since the disappearance of his sister. He lives in Little River, South Carolina but said he will continue to make the 45 minute commute as long as he can. Dayton had a message for anyone involved in his sister's disappearance.
"Come forward and let's get things taken care of," Dayton said. "We want Shannon back and that's the bottom line."
Dayton said he's pleased to have a loyal search team helping him.
"I never understood her fascination with downtown Wilmington," Dayton said. "I'm not a city kind of person. After being up here all this week and meeting the friends that she has here. I understand why she likes Wilmington. It's the people."
"I love you and want you to come home," Dayton said about his sister as he held back tears.
