Ukrainian international captured has Columbus County ties

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Detectives with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office have charged a 26-year-old Ukrainian man with felony identity theft.

Marko Stasiv was picked up by officers with US Customs and Border Protection in New York as he attempted to re-enter the United States from Russia earlier this month. Stasiv was under investigation and his passport had been frozen by detectives.

Columbus County Detectives traveled to New York to take custody of Stasiv who was wanted for illegally transferring around $15,000 back in 2012, from the Nice Blends Corporation in Whiteville, to a bank account opened in Brooklyn, New York. Stasiv also has an address in Brooklyn.

He is currently being held in the Columbus County Detention Center on a $200,000 bond and a detainer for Homeland Security.

Stasiv also has prior charged of fraud out of Virginia Beach. Officials said further charges are expected to be filed.
