BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A registered sex offender was stopped and arrested by a school resource officer Tuesday after he was caught illegally being at Supply Elementary School.

According to Brunswick County Schools Spokesperson Jessica Swencki, James Travis Fowler was trying to attend an awards ceremony hosted by the school, but the electronic visitor verification system alerted school officials Fowler is a registered sex offender.

Swencki explained all visitors are required to check in at the main office of a public school building and are required to sign in through an electronic verification system.

According to Swencki, the Ident-A-Kid system logs visitors in and out, provides them with a temporary identification sticker, and scans their driver's license to cross reference the national sex-offender database.
