Officers find suspects passed out in vehicle with engine still running

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WECT) – A deputy with the Pender County Sheriff's Office responded to a suspicious vehicle call on Hillview Dr. in Hampstead shortly before 11:00 p.m. Monday.

According to officials, the deputy found a male and female passed out inside the vehicle with its engine running. Further investigation identified the male as Nicholas Paul Runkel and the female as Crystal Nicole Sandlin.

Officers arrested and charged Runkel with possession of heroin, possession with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver heroin, possession with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver MDA/MDMA, felony possession of a scheduled I controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Runkel was incarcerated in the Pender County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond.

Officers arrested Sandlin and charged her with DWI. She was incarcerated in the Pender County Jail with a $1,000 secured bond.
