SBI to investigate deadly officer-involved shooting in Pender Co.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Authorities in Pender County are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened Sunday night.

According to officials, around 11 p.m., the NC Highway Patrol responded to a reported hit and run collision at 740 Sloop Point Road in Pender County. While en route, a Pender County deputy at the scene advised the Highway Patrol that shots were being fired from 716 Sloop Point Road in Hampstead.

The trooper arrived at the scene just before 11:30 p.m. and was met by a Pender County deputy and a Surf City Police officer. The deputy approached the front of the home, while the trooper and Surf City officer approached the rear.

The trooper observed three men sitting inside the home and gave loud verbal commands announcing their presence and to comply with all further requests.

According to officials, Maynard Thomas, 67, of Hampstead, reached for and pointed a weapon at the trooper. The trooper fired at Thomas, killing him.

A second subject, identified as Daryl Moore, resisted arrest during the encounter and was charged with resisting and delaying and obstructing a law enforcement officer. The third man complied without incident.

The hit and run vehicle was located at the home off 716 Sloop Road and was registered to Thomas.

District Attorney Ben David said his office made a joint request with the State Highway Patrol for the SBI to lead the investigation into the fatal shooting.
