WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Starter David Jesch held UNCW to a run on six hits over 6.2 innings as Hofstra edged the Seahawks, 3-1, to win the weekend's Colonial Athletic Association series at Brooks Field.
The Pride raised its record to 13-12 overall and 3-3 in the league. It was Hofstra's second straight series win after winning 2-of-3 last season in Hempstead. The Seahawks stumbled to 17-18 and 3-5.
Jesch struck out four in improving to 3-1. After allowing a run early in the second inning, he settled down and allowed just two base runners until there were two out in the seventh.
Brett Schreiber picked up his sixth save of the season, pitching out of bases-loaded situations in both the eighth and ninth innings as UNCW failed to score in either frame.
Nick Monroe (1-3) took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on a hit and a pair of walks over 3.1 innings. UNCW held Hofstra to just two hits until the final inning when the Pride collected three singles.
Ryan LaGrange had two hits for UNCW.
Up next: The Seahawks open a home-and-home with visiting East Carolina on Tuesday before heading to Greenville on Wednesday to wrap up the mid-week series. Both games are set for 6 p.m.
Inside the box score: Both teams combined to for 2-for-20 in RBI opportunities … Hofstra was 1-for-10 with two out, but Brad Witowski had that hit to knock in a run in the 9th … Hofstra scored three runners from third with less than two out, UNCW just one.
Notes: Monroe has not won a game since his bid for perfection against Liberty (Feb. 23) … UNCW pitchers walked seven today and 14 for the series … Hofstra did not have an extra base hit … Casey Golden's modest eight-game hitting streak was halted, going 0-3 at the plate … UNCW failed to turn a double play for the first time in five games.
