LELAND, NC (WECT) - Four homes were damaged after a fire ripped through a neighborhood in the Leland industrial park area off of Amber Pines Drive.

Fire officials on scene said the fire started outside between two homes. The fire spread and destroyed two homes on Amber Pines Drive. Two other homes also suffered heat damage.

According to Chief John Grimes of the Leland Fire Department, the fire started in a rolling trash can located in the side yard of 1188 Amber Pines Drive. Grimes said improperly discarded materials left over from a fire pit the night before ignited the fire.

The resident stated he watered down the materials before going to bed the night before and threw the materials away around 10 a.m.

A community group is organizing a drive for the two families that lost everything.

The clubhouse at Windsor Park, located on Enterprise drive in Leland, will be open Monday from 10 a.m. to 8p.m. to accept donations.
