WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Casey Golden homered and knocked in four runs while Mat Batts scattered eight hits and struck out eight over seven innings as UNCW topped visiting Hofstra, 9-2, in Friday's Colonial Athletic Association series opener at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 17-16 overall and 3-3 in the league with their third consecutive win. The Pride dipped to 11-12 and 1-3 in the CAA.
Batts (2-2) won his second consecutive start while surrendering two runs. He walked one and struck out eight to improve his league-leading total to 69.
Nick Kozlowski (5-2) suffered his second loss of the season and struggled from the onset with his command. The righthander walked seven and allowed just one hit in three-plus innings. UNCW scored five runs against him with four being earned.
The Seahawks managed just five hits on the evening with Luke Dunlap going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Steven Linkous also drove in two runs and scored twice.
Up next: The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. Christian MacDonald (1-3) will make his second start of the season for the Seahawks while Hofstra counters with David D'Errico (0-1), who will also be making his second start for the Pride. UNCW will honor the 2004 CAA Championship team prior to the game.
How it happened: Hofstra tied the game in the top of the second with an unearned run, but UNCW opened the bottom of the frame with walks to Linkous and Drew Farber. Golden followed with his second homer of the season scoring the runners in front of him for a 4-1 lead UNCW would never surrender.
Inside the box score: Batts allowed the leadoff hitter to reach safely twice over seven innings, but did surrender six hits with two outs … UNCW was able to advance 15-of-21 base runners on the night and scored three two-out runs … The Seahawks drew a season-high 11 walks and struck out just twice … UNCW turned three double plays totaling eight over its last three games.
Notes: Reliever Jared Gesell tossed two-innings of one-hit relief for UNCW … Golden pushed his current hitting streak to seven … UNCW now leads the all-time series with Hofstra, 28-7 … Both teams combined for five errors, Hofstra and UNCW entered the series ranked second and third, respectively, in the CAA … Batts moved into fourth on UNCW's strikeout list with 271 career strikeouts.
