PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT/AP) – A jail officer with the Pender County Jail was arrested Thursday morning by the Wilmington Police Department for driving while impaired, among other charges.

According to Sheriff Carson Smith, Charles Tomlinson, 22, was terminated from the jail Thursday evening.

Tomlinson was charged with DWI, carrying a concealed weapon, reckless driving to endanger, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Wilmington Police spokeswoman Linda Rawley said an officer saw an eastbound vehicle in the westbound lanes on Martin Luther King Parkway Thursday morning.

When the vehicle was stopped, there was damage on the passenger side from what investigators said was an accident near the parkway's Burgaw exit.

Smith said Tomlinson began working for the jail in November 2013 and had no prior disciplinary actions.
