Brock tied for 12th after 1st round

eGolf Press Release

Southport, NC – Opening-round play in the eGolf Tour's fifth annual Championship at St. James Plantation began in less-than-ideal fashion on Wednesday, with early morning thunderstorms suspending the start of the tournament for one hour. When the skies cleared, perfect weather ensued, with four players opening the week with rounds of 3-under 69 to sit atop the leaderboard at the demanding Reserve Club at St. James.

Over the past four years, the Championship at St. James Plantation has been won with a score of 8-under or higher a staggering three times. The arduous nature of the Jack Nicklaus design lends to par being a target score, with anything lower than that feeling like a bonus. On Wednesday, only 11 players managed to break par.

Matt Ryan of Santa Clarita, CA, Vaita Guillaume of Tahiti, Ryan Zylstra of Glen Allen, VA and Kevin McLister of Charlotte, NC tied for the day one lead on Wednesday, posting matching rounds of 69 to stand one clear of the field heading into Thursday's second round.

Ryan's day-one scorecard was a bit on the vanilla side, with a two, a three, and 16 fours adding up to 69 by day's end. The lefty was 1-over par through two holes, then birdied four of his next 10 holes before adding a late bogey-birdie stretch on 16-17 to finish off his first-round 69.

"I haven't birdied four par-5s in a long time, and didn't even realize it until after the round," said Ryan of his five-less scorecard. "Even the bogeys on par-3s weren't bad. It was nice out there today. I had a great pairing with Matt Schall and Ryan Nelson – they're kind of boring in a good way, so it just flowed throughout the whole group."

The 27-year-old entered the year with wins in each of his past three seasons on the eGolf Tour, collecting No. 1 at the 2011 Bushnell Classic at Spring Creek, then following that up with victories at the 2012 Championship at River Run and the 2013 Columbia Classic.

Ryan opened his 2014 eGolf Tour campaign with a missed cut at the Palmetto Hall Championship, then narrowly missed grabbing win No. 4 at the inaugural Championship at Callawassie Island, where a final-hole bogey left him one shot shy of winner J.T. Griffin.

"I wasn't feeling very good after Palmetto Hall, but I knew it was close," he said. "At Callawassie, my golf management was good, and all of a sudden I woke up tied for the lead going into the last hole. I think that momentum carried me over into Mexico."

Ryan, a conditional member of the Web.com Tour this year, made three starts this spring on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica, losing the TransAmerican Power Products CRV Open in Guadalajara, Mexico in a seven-man playoff after posting 17-under par for the week. The former Fresno State golfer is currently 12th on the tour's Order of Merit, with the top five players at season's end earning status on the 2015 Web.com Tour.

"Anytime you start off good and start the year well it gives you confidence going forward," he said. "It allows you to play with more of a free flow the rest of the year."

Guillaume, who starred in college at Campbell University, found himself at even par through 11 holes in the first round at St. James, then birdied Nos. 3, 6 and 7 (his 12, 15 and 16) en route to his 3-under 69.

Guillaume's 2013 campaign on the eGolf Tour delivered four top-25s and a season-best, third-place finish at the Cabarrus Classic in November. That top-5, his first in an eGolf event, gave way to solid play over the winter months, where rounds of 71-67-68—206 turned into a victory at eGolf Tour Florida's Citrus Open in January.

The 25-year-old was the opening-round co-leader at Callawassie, then recorded top-15s at both the NorthStone Open and Cowans Ford Open, with the latter being a T3 that tied his career best from the prior year.

After opening the year with three missed cuts, thanks in part to slow starts, Zylstra reversed the trend on Wednesday, birdieing two of his first four holes to ease into what became a 69.

"All year long, I've gotten off to bad starts, so today was pretty nice," said Zylstra, 34. "I told my wife that the opening birdie kind of got the day started and I was able to take it from there."

Zylstra bogeyed Nos. 6 and 8 to turn at even par, then finished strong, recording birdies on 14, 17 and 18 to reach 3-under for the day.

Of the three co-leaders, McLister was the only one to record 69 in the day's morning wave, which opened in the wind and dampness left over from the early storm.

His 3-under-par effort was a rally of sorts, after three bogeys in his first 11 holes left him at 1-over par for the day. From there, the 25-year-old former Delaware standout birdied Nos. 12, 13, 14 and 15 to reach 3-under, where he finished after paring his final three holes. McLister held the outright lead by himself throughout much of the day on Wednesday before being matched later on.

The opening 69 was a continuation of good play for McLister, who notched two top-25s in his first three starts this year – including a career-best-tying T5 at the Cowans Ford Open two weeks ago. That effort matched a T5 at the 2013 Forest Oaks Classic – one of eight top-25s during what was his most consistent campaign to date on the eGolf Tour.

Five players are tied for second at 2-under par, including three-time eGolf Tour winner T.J. Howe of Osceola, PA, two-time tour winner Bruce Woodall of Yanceyville, NC and 2012 U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox of Hendersonville, TN.

A current Web.com Tour member, Fox won the U.S. Amateur at famed Cherry Hills Country Club after earning the 63rd of 64 match play seeds in a 17-players-for-14-spots playoff following the conclusion of 36 holes of stroke play. The victory delivered exemptions into the 2013 Masters Tournament, U.S. Open and Open Championship, as well as seven additional starts in PGA TOUR-sanctioned events, including this year's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Second-round play in The Championship at St. James Plantation will begin at 8:00 AM on Thursday morning. Following the completion of 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 35 percent and ties for the final two rounds of play. The tournament is open to the public and free of charge.
