WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Pageant parents are concerned about the outfit choices from Miss North Carolina, Johna Edmonds.

According to pageant parents, the outfits are too revealing and fail to set an example of a role model and representative of our state.

"There's a very big difference between pretty and provocative and she pushes that line," said pageant Dad Blake Hobbs, "and my little girl looks up to Miss North Carolina."

Miss Brunswick County Sweetheart Majestic, Autumn Stowers said she has a specific idea of a role model, one she hopes she is fulfilling as a representative of Brunswick County.

"A role model is someone who should dress appropriately and do things she would want younger girls to do," said Stowers. "When I see some of the things she wears and some of the revealing clothing I think it sends the wrong message; a message about your body and not your mind and the kind of person you are."

A statement from the Miss North Carolina organization defends Johna Edmonds outfit selection and also addresses another controversial photo shoot that offended the Native American community:

"The Miss North Carolina Organization was not aware of the photos recently posted online of Miss North Carolina that were found to be offensive to those in the Native American community.  While Miss North Carolina is of Native American decent and was photographed in costume, she serves as a wonderful representative for all of North Carolina.

We are very proud that the Miss North Carolina Organization has provided over $35,000 in scholarship awards to Miss North Carolina contestants during the past year.  We continue to provide a vehicle to further the personal and professional goals of our contestants while instilling a spirit of community service through a variety of unique state-wide programs."

Beth Knox, Executive Director, Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant:

"In reference to the photos you emailed me, I simply must say:

Johna has been an excellent representative for us all year, promoting our organization with intelligence, grace, and style.  She has also diligently promoted her platform of eliminating literacy every week since she was crowned last June.  In my opinion, the white gown is quite lovely and reveals no skin other than her arms.  The beautiful red gown was appropriate for the Robeson County Dancing With the Stars event for which her attendance was requested, an event where children were not in attendance.  We are very grateful for our wardrobe sponsors who supply Miss North Carolina with appearance gowns during her entire reign.  The entire Miss North Carolina Organization is very proud of Johna and the work she has diligently performed this year as she has partnered with organizations such as Hooked on Phonics to spread her love of reading to school children all across our state.  It is our hope that our wonderful North Carolinians will also support Johna in her statewide efforts to eliminate literacy."
