WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – A Columbus County restaurant closed by the state last month due to unpaid taxes re-opened Tuesday.

Mamma Rita's, an Italian restaurant in downtown Whiteville, owed the North Carolina Department of Revenue nearly $16,000 in taxes, fines and interest, according to a certificate of tax liability filed at the Columbus County Courthouse.

State officials changed the locks on doors and seized equipment in the restaurant.

Mamma Rita's owner Gary Smith didn't want to discuss the tax issue Tuesday, but said he's glad to be back in business.

Trevor Johnson, a spokesman at the Department of Revenue, confirmed the state turned the restaurant back over to the owner, but said he couldn't provide any additional information due to confidentiality requirements.
