WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department is cracking down on the illegal use of dirt bikes and four wheelers in the city.

According to police, people are riding them on roads and sidewalks, creating a dangerous situation for pedestrians and drivers.

Wilmington Police Officer Kevin Getman, with the traffic unit, said dirt bikes and four wheelers have caused several accidents, some even deadly.

"They are fun, but they are designed to be ridden off roads in a safe environment," Getman said.

The Wilmington Police Department has received several complaints, not just about safety issues, but also from noise from the vehicles.

"The best thing to do is get the best description that you can, the rider of the vehicle, the description of the vehicle itself, and hand that information over to law enforcement," Getman noted. "So we can follow up with an investigation and try to catch these people."

Police said if you're caught illegally using a dirt bike or four wheeler, you can be charged with careless and reckless driving, failure to register a vehicle and license and safety inspection charges.
