BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Parents in Brunswick County may have to deal with yet another change to their child's school schedule.
School Superintendent Dr. Edward Pruden has asked the board change the schedule to allow elementary school students to go first (around 7:45 a.m.) and high school kids go later (around 9 a.m.).
According to Pruden, the reason is due to sleep studies and traffic safety records which reflect that high school students are more alert later in the morning -- allowing them to have more focus when driving to school and heightened concentration while in class.
Pruden said the evidence is compelling that all children do better when elementary kids go first.
Pruden also said he believes this newly proposed schedule would be more convenient for parents and their transportation patterns.
The school system is asking the community to share their thoughts with the board throughout the month of April.
The board of education is expected to review the information and potentially vote on the proposed changes at its next board meeting in May.
If approved, the schedule changes would go into effect starting with the 2014-2015 school year.
