PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A candidate running for sheriff in Pender County was charged with DWI and reckless driving over the weekend, according to Highway Patrol.

Officials said Scott Lawson drove over a ditch just after midnight near the intersection of Mallard Road and Country Club Road and hit two parked cars in a driveway.

According to Trooper H.A. Cannaday, the DWI was not for alcohol, but for prescription drug use.

The Pender County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Lawson is a former deputy, but stopped working for the department in 2010.

Lawson is due in court in May.
