BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A family in Brunswick County is heart broken -- mourning the loss of their 17-year-old son, whose body was found Sunday in the Shallotte River.
According to authorities, Silas Oller of Sunset Beach was found near the Shell Point Community by Brunswick Air One around 2 p.m.
Silas was a sophomore at West Brunswick High School where he also played with the jazz band. His mother, Laura Oller says Silas was a good kid who didn't do drugs, made good grades, and absolutely loved music.
"Silas was outgoing. He had a lot of friends who brought their problems to him like his mother," said Oller. "He was the joy of my life. I just don't know what else to say."
His mother had a difficult time putting her feelings into words.
"I really don't know how to handle it," said Oller. "I feel like I could have done something different. I feel like I failed him in some ways."
Now, this family is hoping that their tragic loss will turn into a positive -- hoping that others use Silas' story as a reminder to be especially careful around the water.
"I have no words, it won't change anything," said Oller. "I hope it's a lesson. All I know is that my son was loved and I have found solace in that."
The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the incident according to the Coastline Volunteer Rescue Squad.
According to the sheriff's office, the incident appears to have been accidental, but officials will continue to investigate and an autopsy is pending.
